APPEARANCES

April 19, 2003; 12:30 p.m.
Live reading at the World Horror Convention in Kansas City, MO.
(See www.WHC03.org for convention details.)
--> There's a new contest/giveaway related to this reading. You don't have to show up to be eligible! See next section.

I also plan to compete in--and win--the annual Gross-Out Contest held that night at 11:30 p.m. If you don't mind sick, twisted, explicit stuff that recognizes no boundaries or taboos, you'll get a kick out of this event. Last year, I laughed so hard at the entries that I nearly threw up. . . . I'll be at WHC for the rest of the convention as well, so if you see me, say hi!

-------

On March 2, I appeared at the Waldenbooks in Uniontown, PA and had a great time. Billed as the launch party for M. Stephen Lukac's OOGIE BOOGIE CENTRAL (Medium Rare Books), other authors present included Brian Keene, Roger Range, Michael Arnzen, and of course Stephen. Pictures are at http://webpages.charter.net/mslukac/event.htm. Afterwards, I drove home through some incredibly dangerous conditions: fog and snow at nighttime, on slippery, twisty, unlit mountain roads. Thank God for 4-wheel drive.

NEW CONTEST & GIVEAWAY

If you can guess what story I will read at the World Horror Convention (see above) prior to April 19, I will send you an autographed copy of it. If nothing else, you can laugh at my lousy manuscript formatting.

Your hint is the March 31 news article at www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/local/5523432.htm

Send your answers to me at contest@matthewwarner.com. If you're right, I'll ask for your mailing address.

FEATURED FOREWARNER READER: DEENA HOLLAND

It wasn't until I met Deena Holland that I realized how much fun it must be to illustrate horror titles professionally.

A resident of Stone Mountain, GA, Deena entered the horror-publishing industry in the summer of 2001 by illustrating Gary Braunbeck's collection, "Three From the Hill: A Mini-Collection of Cedar Hill Stories," a prequel to the massive "Graveyard People: The Collected Cedar Hill Stories, Vol. 1" coming this summer from Earthling Publications--and which she's also illustrating. Since then, her credits include cover illos for Lone Wolf Publications and FEMSPEC magazine, movie posters for Mindscape Pictures, and forthcoming art for Earthling Publications and Cemetery Dance Publications.

A browse of her website, www.DeenaHolland.com, reveals a unique technique combining chalk pastels, watercolor, cut paper collage, pencils, markers, and spray paint--often all in the same drawing. I was fascinated to learn that for a current project, she used scattered pine needles as a stencil to achieve the effect of sunlight filtering through water. (She has cool freebies on her site, too, such as Halloween cards and a 2003 calendar.)

Surprisingly, Deena told me that she considers herself a horror fan first and an illustrator second. She's extremely well-read in the field--her favorite writers include Robert Bloch and Matthew Warner (ahem)--and she often discusses horror on the "books" section of the Gorezone.net message board. Other passions include college basketball, anime, hiking and camping.

Deena graduated from UNC-Charlotte in 1998 with a BFA in illustration. By day, she is a graphic- and interactive-media designer for Acuity Inc., of Decatur, GA, churning out high-quality advertisements at the drop of a hat. She owns two friendly cats, Randal and Scotch, the latter of which can pee in the toilet.

If you see her at next week's World Horror Convention in Kansas City, wish her a happy birthday (April 16). Happy birthday, Deena!

CURRENT & COMING ATTRACTIONS

Double Dragon Publishing and Shocklines.com are still taking pre-orders for the June 2003 trade paperback edition of my first novel, THE ORGAN DONOR. I will individually sign all pre-orders to the buyers. After that, if you want to buy an autographed copy, you'll have to find me at a book-signing.

At some point, Shocklines.com will post a .pdf containing the first two chapters for you to download. (My website has Chapter 1, but Shocklines is the only place where you'll find Chapter 2 for free.)

Andrew Monge, a denizen of the Gorezone.net message board, posted a terrific book review that I've reproduced with his permission on the Media page of www.MatthewWarner.com. Here's a preview: "I don't recall the last time I tore through a story this fast. . . . The Organ Donor finally does justice to this sub-genre. It's amazing how much Matthew has managed to pack into this novel considering its relative brevity. This book is tight! . . . The attention to detail in this story is incredible."

I've also received an advance copy of a rave review by Celia A. Leaman for www.ebook-reviews.net. When it's been posted, I'll link to it on my website so you can read the whole thing. In the meantime, here's an excerpt: "Very highly recommended. . . . As I put this book down I felt slightly haunted by its provocative content. Although some might consider The Organ Donor to be somewhat of a fantasy, the chilling thought is that it might not be at all. . . . The plot of this book is so very cleverly interwoven with Chinese mythology, and Matthew Warner is not shy of description. The Organ Donor is a thrilling read that once you start, you won't want to put it down."

Within the next year I'll be in two anthologies:

-->"Blessed Among Women," a short story collaboration with Wendy Brewer.
For sale at www.Shocklines.com.
Appearing in the FAMILY PLOTS anthology (Wild Roses Publications), which will also include stories from national and bestselling horror writers like Jack Ketchum, Tom Piccirilli, Graham Masterton and Douglas Clegg.

-->"The Forgiving Type," a short story inspired by last year's Georgia crematory scandal.
In THE DECAY WITHIN anthology, coming from 3F Publications (www.3fpublications.com). I talked a bit about this one during my radio interview with Jerry Lentz, which you can listen to on the Media page of www.MatthewWarner.com. Other contributors include Kealan-Patrick Burke, John Urbancik, and Monica J. O'Rourke.

-------

More information about the following titles are on the Publications page of www.MatthewWarner.com:

RECOMMENDED READING

Contact me if you need help locating these fine works:

-->"Grave Men," a novel by Tom Picirrilli.
What the hell *can't* Pic do? Novels, poetry, short stories, editing. Now, in addition to being accomplished at horror and mystery, add cowboy westerns. I gobbled this thing up in two days flat.

-->"American Gods," a novel by Neil Gaiman.
This one was a nominee for the 2002 International Horror Guild Award, and now I know why. Read it and you will too.

-->"Forbidden Knowledge: From Prometheus to Pornography," a study of the ethics of literary and scientific inquiry, by Roger Shattuck.
Are there things we shouldn't know? Shattuck examines religious myths, literature, and scientific achievements. There's some neat sections on the occult and that notorious French writer, the Marquis de Sade.

****************************

"Mathew Warner is a pawn of the Cabal, the Illuminati and the Bildenburg Group and as such spreads chaos throughout the Genre, even going so far as to initiate false investigations into malicious viruses that run rampant amongst the faithful Rebel Alliance that struggles to save the Genre from the oppressive forces that continue to malign and subjugate the only hope for humanity.

"He also has the annoying tendency to inspire run-on sentences that confuse important issues and call for the incessant consumption of snack cakes.

"Damn! He made me do it again."
