NEWS ROUND-UP
Greetings! It's been awhile since the last newsletter, so I have
bunches to report.
-->Personal News:
The past few months have been a happy time for me. My fiancée
Deena Lineberger (a.k.a. illustrator Deena Holland) moved in, and we finally
unloaded THING (That House In Nowhere Georgia). We've been planning
a horror-themed wedding and honeymoon, which I'll tell you about in a
future newsletter. I've also awakened in the night to the terrifying
sound of our cat cleaning itself and have lived to tell about it.
Last weekend, Deena and I participated in a walkathon called Matthew's
Miles, benefiting brain cancer research. I'm mentioning it here
because there's a good chance that its organizers, horror author John
Passarella and his wife Andrea, will hold the event again. It was
a beautiful day walking for a good cause, so I hope you'll bookmark http://www.MatthewsMiles.org
and consider participating next time as either a walker or sponsor.
-->Professional News:
THE ORGAN DONOR paperback edition came out on July 4th and was greeted
by rave reviews in two of horror's flagship publications, Cemetery Dance
magazine and Hellnotes newsletter. The full text of these and several
other reviews are posted at http://www.MatthewWarner.com/media.htm.
The novel was also Shocklines.com's #7 bestselling advance-order item
the week of June 13, the #2 bestseller the week of July 23, and, according
to the proprietor, is currently "one of the top two selling Double
Dragon [Press] books" in stock.
In August, I was the featured author at The Murder Hole (http://www.themurderhole.com).
Besides the first chapter of The Organ Donor, TMH reprinted "Snow
Snakes," a story about the Gaia theory, snow-skiing, and H.P. Lovecraft,
which was first published earlier this year at The Chancery House (http://www.thechanceryhouse.com).
TMH's interview of me can be accessed via http://www.MatthewWarner.com/media.htm.
This week, I was notified that "Noah's Temple," a science fiction
novella, received an Honorable Mention in the 2003 second-quarter L. Ron
Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest (http://www.writersofthefuture.com).
Coming up, a new short story entitled "Angel's Wings" will appear
in Tales From The Gorezeone, an anthology edited by Kealan Patrick-Burke
and benefiting the National Association to Protect Children (http://www.protect.org),
a social welfare political lobby. A website about this anthology
just went up at http://webpages.charter.net/tftg/.
I was especially happy to get into this book because its cover illustrator
is my fiancée (http://www.DeenaHolland.com).
I'll also be making a nuisance of myself at the 2003 World Fantasy Convention
in Washington, DC, on October 30-November 1 (http://www.seahunt.org/wfc/),
and giving a seminar for Fairfax County Public School librarians at their
conference next March. Don't worry, I'll be sure to warn the librarians
to have their immunizations updated.
A nice fringe benefit of marrying a professional website designer is a
retouching of one's own web presence. So while you're surfing http://www.MatthewWarner.com,
check out the bells, buttons, and whistles that Deena has added.

GIVEAWAY: SHOCKLINES.COM GIFT CERTIFICATE
Shocklines.com is *the* ass-kickingnest online bookstore for horror, so
I'm proud to be giving away a $25 gift certificate for any Shocklines
product to one of you lucky ForeWarner readers. Here's what you
gotta do:
If you've read The Organ Donor--in either its eBook or paperback editions--then
post a reader review to its page at Amazon.com. (You can find the
page by going to Amazon and entering my name or the book title as a search
term.) Amazon can take f-o-r-e-v-e-r to post them, so simultaneously
with your submission to Amazon, notify me at contest@matthewwarner.com
that you've posted. Whenever I'm about to send another newsletter,
my cat will randomly select a winner.

RECOMMENDED READING
I only recommend titles I've read and which I think are worth your time.
Many don't make the cut. Contact me if you need help locating these
fine works:
--> The Beast That Was Max, a novel by Gerard Houarner (Leisure, 2001)
Max is the ultimate killer, an assassin powered by an inner demon called
the Beast. This novel consists of two linked novellas that are hopefully
the beginning of a long series.
--> Under Cover Of Night, a collection by Mary SanGiovanni (Flesh &
Blood Press, 2002)
Seven horrifying stories by one of the most interesting new voices of
the genre.
--> Accidents Waiting To Happen, a novel by Simon Wood (Barclay Books,
2002)
A thrilling tale of crime, blackmail, and a strange twist in the life
insurance industry.
--> City Infernal, a novel by Edward Lee (Leisure, 2000)
Ever wanted to visit Hell? You won't after reading this book--but
you will want to read more of Lee's work.
--> One Rainy Night, a novel by Richard Laymon (Leisure, 2001)
Laymon has one of the most consistently compelling voices in horror.
This novel is a fine example of his handiwork.
--> The Devil's Cup: A History Of The World According To Coffee, a
travelogue by Stewart Lee Allen
Yes, you read that right: coffee. Aside from teaching you the origins
of mocha, cappuccino, and the crescent roll, Allen's first-person travelogue
has some fascinating and often hilarious stories about his travels through
Ethiopia, Turkey, Brazil, and Paris.
--> Legacies, a novel by F. Paul Wilson (Tor, 1998)
Repairman Jack doesn't fix appliances; he fixes situations. Think
MacGyver with more class, humanity, intelligence, and weirdness.
I hear there's a Repairman Jack movie in production. . . .
--> Midnight Journeys, an anthology edited by Davi Dee and Bill Allen
(Ozark Triangle Press, 1995)
Short, dark pieces by writers such as Michael Arnzen, Edwardt Bryant,
Gary Jonas, Barbara Ferrenz, and Edo Van Belkom.

"We all have our bad days and flashes of incoherence, but we have
enough history between us to know when someone is shaking off a bad barrel
of amontillado after a con and when someone is fondling frozen squirrel
heads in search of the next victim. . . . Although it's sometimes hard
to tell with Matt."
